I hardly ever just throw anything on when I’m getting dressed. There is a method to how I choose my outfit everyday. I will either plan a piece of my outfit, if not the entire outfit, the night before or choose something that morning based on my mood. Focusing on one piece at a time is what makes it so much easier to get dressed in the morning. I thought I would share my thought process when I choose an outfit, my style guide if you will. The steps are pretty universal in my opinion, it’s not just something that is tailored for my style only, but for anybody anywhere.
1. My statement piece
I always look in my closet and choose something that I really love and want the rest of my outfit to focus on. Whether it’s a top with frills, printed booties, or patent leather pants, it is always one thing that I want to be the center of attention. Once I’ve picked that out I move onto the next step.
2. Keep it muted
When I say “keep it muted” I mean that I don’t pick out another piece that is super eye catching or distracting. For example, I won’t pair a blouse with a pattern print with a pair of boots that have flowers all over it. You get what I mean? There’s too much distraction and it just doesn’t blend well. What I would pair together is a ruffled top with some suede booties. The ruffle top stands out and the suede booties compliment it, but it wouldn’t overwhelm the outfit.
3. Color Coordinate
Color coordinating my pieces is a big deal. I like to keep most of my pieces with a similar color scheme. For example, I will choose different shades of grey or neutral colors. Jeans do not count because they go with everything lol. So if I have a black top on I will maybe pair it with some light wash jeans and then shoes with black in it and wear a black purse. The black all ties in together.
4. Simple Jewelry
These days I always keep my jewelry simple. I think there is something very classic about dainty, simple jewelry. You can layer dainty necklaces and easily bump your jewelry style up a notch. Necklaces and earrings are pretty much the only kind of jewelry I’ll wear. I find that bracelets usually don’t fit on my tiny wrist and rings are too big as well, I’m a size 4.
My favorite kind of shoes are boots, if you see me in the street you’ll most like see me in boots. I can’t help it, some girls love sandals or sneakers, I’m all about the boots. An ankle boot is my main squeeze, they’re more comfortable to wear and there are so many different styles. Now, if boots do not go with my outfit then I will just choose whatever shoes match it, but my style tends to lead more towards outfits that can be paired with boots.
